About Princeville Ranch
Did you know?
Since the early 1800's, the lands of Princeville have evolved to meet the needs of the times. Today, Princeville Ranch continues on as a working cattle ranch with deep historical roots, providing a highly prized natural beef. With the Carswell family at the helm, the Ranch also has witnessed the development of a highly popular adventure company. With a staff of over 70, Princeville Ranch Adventures now welcomes as many as 220 guests as day during the busy summer season.
The lands were first grazed by cattle in 1831, making Princeville Ranch the oldest working cattle ranch on Kaua'i. Today it occupies 2,500 acres with cows, calves and cattle numbering about 400. The Ranch spans from 'mauka' (on the mountain side) to 'makai' (ocean side) and all the way from Hanalei to the edge of Kalihiwai Valley. The ranch is family-run and operated by the Carswells, who trace their family roots back six generations on Kaua'i.
Cattle operations produce a highly-prized all-natural beef. Sold locally under the North Shore Kaua'i Beef label, this delicious, tender beef is 100% grass-fed and free of hormones and antibiotics. The Carswell family takes great satisfaction in meeting the growing demand for healthy fare from 'green' businesses. Equally important, they acknowledge the importance of beef production as a sustainable ranch operation for the future.
In 1978 the Carswells established a successful stables business called Princeville Ranch Stables. Horseback riding was the first adventure tour offered on the ranch. The "Waterfall Picnic Ride" became very popular on Kaua'i, bringing riders inland through rainforest to a majestic waterfall.
Princeville horseback rides have always offered a distinctive experience: guests are allowed to spread out as they roam across open pastures, providing more than the common 'nose-to-tail' ride. Riders enjoy another unique feature: riding through the herd and in season, seeing the precious calves. The Carswells also have been pioneers in natural horsemanship, providing a full program of lessons and training over the years.
In 1999 hiking tours began, with kayaking and zip line adventures soon to follow, under the banner Princeville Ranch Adventures. The exciting “Zip N’ Dip” tour quickly became a favorite on Kaua’i. 2010 brought a first to Hawai’i – the “Ride N’ Glide” adventure, which combines a beautiful horseback ride with three fun fast zip lines.
As stewards of Princeville Ranch today, the Carswell family remains grateful for the opportunity to share this pristine, natural beauty, while preserving the open space and dense foliage for generations to come.
